This is great for dinner parties. Prepare it in advance, stick it in the oven and forget it until time to serve dinner. Leftovers are good re-warmed the next day.
Brush some olive oil and salt it and you will have the perfect appetizer for your special dinner.

1 loaf French or Mexican crusty bread
1 1/2 sticks butter or extra-virgin olive oil
1/4 tsp. garlic salt
1/4 tsp. marjoram
1/4 tsp. paprika
1/4 tsp. rosemary
1/4 tsp. thyme
Cut the bread into 1 in. slices down to 1/2 in. from the bottom crust so that it is not cut all the way through. Cram the remaining ingredients into a spread. Spread the butter mixture on each side of each slice of bread. If any remains, spread it across the top of the loaf. Wrap the bread in aluminum foil and bake in a slow oven (about 325 degrees) for at least an hour, longer if you like.
