Add, Don’t Subtract

Instead of concentrating on cutting foods out of your diet, bring new foods to the table. There are probably a whole slew of fruits and vegetables you’ve never sampled. In order to prevent yourself from feeling deprived, train yourself to look at all the foods you can eat instead of those you should stay away from. Try branching out in the produce section of the supermarket. Instead of buying the usual head of iceberg lettuce for salads, give a tender spring mix a try. Take a look in the international section for the exotic flavors and nutrition of papaya or jicama. Give seasonal fruits and vegetables a try by visiting u-pick farms and farmer’s markets in your area. Or sign up to have a local co-op of farmers deliver fresh produce to your door each week.

Many farms and markets will offer recipes for their produce, which is especially helpful when you’re trying something new. Don’t know what to do with that fall squash or spring asparagus? Do some research and give healthy recipes a try. Thanks to the Internet, there are thousands of diet-friendly dishes just waiting to be experienced. Add new foods for variety, and you’ll be less tempted to fill up on diet disasters.
