The Food Fountain of Youth
There’s no magic bullet to ward off the effects that the years have on your mind, skin and body, but you can slow the hands of time by eating the right foods. Lack of exercise, smoking and a poor diet all contribute to aging prematurely, but these are all factors that you can control. Increase activity, stop smoking and eat a healthy diet, and you just may turn back the hands of time. Adding foods that are rich in antioxidants, particularly free radical-neutralizing phytonutrients, can reduce your risk of contracting age-related diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease and osteoporosis. Foods that reduce inflammation also go a long way in keeping the body young. Cold-water fish, such as salmon, and richly colored fruits and vegetables can work wonders. Other foods that qualify as anti-aging “superfoods” include whole grains, nuts (walnuts in particular), water, dark chocolate and yogurt. On the other hand, refined sugars, flour, trans fats and starches can cause inflammation and accelerate aging. Sipping green tea offers myriad health benefits, but studies are showing that green tea polyphenols applied directly to the skin offer the best anti-aging properties. Non-food causes of aging include stress, excess UV light and hormones. Try relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation to reduce stress, and wear sunblock to reduce those pesky wrinkles that add years to your face. Remember, you’re only as old as you feel.
