With kids, anytime is the time for a party. You do not have to rent giant blow-ups for your front yard and feed every kid within a radius of 100 miles either. Letting your kids have a slumber party with a homemade cake, homemade pizza, a couple of bags of chips and cokes will be remembered for a lifetime.
Have parties for the usual occasions like birthdays and holidays, but also have parties for things like getting their braces off, last day of school, first day of school, good grades, reading "x" amount of books, and just plain, old silly fun parties for kids.
Backwards Party
Have silly parties like the "backwards" party where everything has to be done backwards - the guests wear their clothes backwards and come in the back door. You have the activities of the party backwards, play games backwards etc. Lot's of craziness.
April Fool's Day Party
Another "silly" party idea is an April Fool's Day party. Kids love to play practical jokes so have an entire party based around this theme. Plan practical jokes to play on the guests and decorate in a wacky way.
Make all the pictures in the house hang crooked.
Turn the mirrors backwards.
Have the furniture rearranged in crazy ways.
Have a "joke" cake where you use salt instead of sugar (then have some real treats).
The guests have to plan a practical joke to play when they get to the party and have to tell a joke to get in the door.
Snow Party
Plan ahead for this and when you have the first big snow of the year and the kids are out of school, you'll be ready at a moment's notice.
Plan games that can be played outside in the snow:
Do "snow painting" - Fill spray bottles with colored water and decorate the snow.
Have a snow sculpture contest.
Have a snowman dressing contest - have guests bring clothes to dress up their snowman.
For inside snow activities, bring the kids inside and have a warm snack ready and some homemade hot chocolate.
Teach the kids to make paper snowflakes.
Play snow spell - where the kids get a pile of macaroni letters and you see which team can spell the most snow-related words the fastest.
Build snowmen out of marshmallows and decorate them with edible treats.
As you can see, you can find an excuse to have every kind of party imaginable and it doesn't have to be a huge party or expensive. By having frequent, small parties, your kids don't expect the all-out, break the bank kind of parties and it's something your kids will always remember.
