Do You Need a Facial Moisturizer?
The short answer is yes. Most women need a moisturizer, whether they have oily, dry or combination skin. Facial skin has different needs than the skin on your body, so you can’t just use one all over. But with so many products on the market, making the wrong choice can mean your wallet and complexion take a hit. Not only should you consider your skin type before you buy, but also whether or not you need a formula with SPF to protect your skin in the daytime – most of us need at least an SPF of 15 — or a more emollient version to treat skin while you sleep. Other “extras” to consider are anti-aging ingredients such as retinol; organic ingredients; protection for sensitive skin; plus acne and other skin imperfections. While you may not find it all in one package, there are some great products out there that don’t cost a fortune. For normal skin, great moisturizers can be found at the drugstore. Highly rated brands include Aveeno, Cetaphil and Olay. Aveeno adds SPF and even an antiaging factor to its formula. There are numerous Olay formulas for different types of skin, especially to fight the signs of aging. Preventing the signs of aging while simultaneously fighting acne can be frustrating, but if you’re 30 or older, then it’s time to switch to a product that contains salicylic acid and is oil-free to fight breakouts and keep the rest of your skin hydrated. Women with sensitive skin should choose hypoallergenic, fragrance-free formulas – going organic can help, too. And for women with dry skin, finding that balance between a moisturizer that keeps skin hydrated and one that’s downright greasy is difficult. Rely on classics such as Oil of Olay and Pond’s to hydrate skin without clogging it. For dry skin – and for other skin types looking for a night cream – look for collagen and elastin in the ingredient list. Aloe is another soothing addition for any skin type.
