How to Treat Body Acne
Having a breakout on your face is one thing, but imagine waking up to blemishes all over – arms, chest, back, buttocks…this is reality for many people. Body acne is less common than regular acne, but those who suffer from facial acne are more prone to it. Risk factors for body acne are genetics, overactive oil glands, proliferation of bacteria and in some cases, tight-fitting clothing or equipment, such as football pads. This type of acne is rare and called acne mechanica; it’s caused by heat and friction against covered skin – even a frequently worn, heavy backpack can cause it. Regardless of the type, you probably just want it gone, especially in time for swimsuit and tank top season. Body acne needs a little bit more aggressive treatment than facial acne, because the skin tends to be thicker and has larger pores, making them easier to clog. Start by showering daily with an exfoliating wash that contains glycolic acid or alphahydroxy acids. These products help you reveal the freshest, newest skin in order to get acne medicine where it needs to go. Try a wipe that contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, which will treat the acne. Wear loose, breathable clothes to inhibit skin from being in contact with its own oils, deposited on tight clothing. Support healthy skin with an antioxidant-rich diet and by reducing your stress level. When you’re under stress, the body’s endocrine system produces more of the “stress” hormone cortisol, which causes sebaceous glands to produce more oil. More oil means more acne, so limit your stress and get plenty of rest.
