Prevent Wrinkles Before They Happen

All you twentysomethings, listen up. And if you’re older and don’t have wrinkles yet, you’re lucky, too. There are ways to prevent wrinkles before they even make that roadmap across your face, from crows’ feet to laugh lines. There are a few dos and don’ts that will definitely do your face a favor in the future. First and foremost, don’t smoke. The lip-pursing motion it takes to suck down the smoke will create fine lines around the mouth over time, and the smoke that drifts up into your face deposits toxins and dries out skin. Don’t forego the sunscreen – ever. Sun damage is a major culprit of wrinkles – and more seriously, skin cancer. And while you’re in the sun or outside, it’s always a good idea to don some good sunglasses. Adjust the font size and brightness of your computer screen as well to avoid eyestrain and squinting.

All that squinting can cause crows’ feet around your eyes and the “11” wrinkle between your eyes. Your face can even form wrinkles while you sleep! To prevent that brow wrinkle – because you have no idea if you’re frowning in your sleep! – invest in Frownies, patches that you apply to the area between your eyebrows before bed. These triangle-shaped paper stickers keep your skin from wrinkling into that frowny face, and for about $12 for a box of 144, they’re a steal. Consider how you sleep as well – if you’re a side sleeper or tend to keep your hands around your face or under your head while you sleep on your side, you may inadvertently cause wrinkles by pushing your facial skin in unnatural directions. To really save your skin from wrinkles – not to mention whatever’s been deposited on your pillowcase, from hair products to makeup, sleep on your back.
