The Best Foods for Acne

Fight breakouts from the inside out. If acne is a problem for you, then you might think those stereotypical foods – chocolate, greasy pizza, etc. – are causing it. That may be the case if all you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner is junk, but there are foods that can actually help quell your problem skin. Junk food in moderation is OK, but the more packaged salty, sugary or preservative-laden foods you put in your body, the worse off your skin will be. Foods that promote healthy skin are those that are “inflammation-friendly;” in other words, they don’t cause an immune response in your body that treats the food like a toxin and releases free radicals. Antioxidant-rich foods quell those free radicals and promote a calmer system overall.

Look for deeply colored fruits and veggies to contain the most antioxidants – dark green, orange, purple and red are great signs that the food is rich in antioxidants and phytochemicals. Monounsaturated fats, like those found in fatty fish and olive oil, are also great for the skin. They balance the oils in your skin and give skin a wonderful glow. Foods that contain selenium promote skin health as well – these include nuts, particularly brazil nuts, whole-grain breads and pastas, and eggs. If you’re having trouble with your skin all of a sudden, take a look at your drug regimen. Antibiotics can upset the digestive system and reduce absorption of certain vitamins and minerals. Probiotics in the form of a pill or yogurt can help build back up the beneficial bacteria in your gut that antibiotics kill off in order to increase the nutrients you absorb.
