The Church Challenge: Keeping Kids Quiet
Going to church, temple or any other service with children can be a real religious experience, especially if your little one has a hard time staying in the spirit of things. No matter how much faith you have in your child, chances are he is going to get bored early on. You’ll be lucky if he sits still for six minutes, yet alone 60. There are some tried-and-true tips that might make the whole experience even more peaceful. The secret is to come prepared. Bring a bag of quiet toys – figures, stickers books, coloring books and other activities that can be done in silence. They should be toys that might be a “surprise” so they’ll keep him interested. In addition, you may want to pack a few snacks that can be consumed without making a mess. Goldfish, grapes or oyster crackers are all safe options. Bring small bottles of water and wipes to keep the kids clean. Sit in the back of the worship hall in case your child gets loud. In the event he does start crying, fussing or talking loudly, escort your child out so as not to disturb your fellow parishioners. It’s usually a good idea to sit yourself between siblings as a way to discourage them from talking. Try not to lose your cool if your children don’t behave exactly as planned. Remember, it’s a process you’ll want to try over and over until you finally get it right. As your child becomes more acclimated to the process of sitting in a worship service, he’ll begin to behave on task as well. If you’ve tried and failed, consider that your child might not be old enough to attend services yet. Enroll him in an age-appropriate class at your place of worship or even opt to leave him at the child-sitting service if there’s one available. Last but not least, there’s always the babysitting route.
