Turkey Neck? Try Ultherapy
If you can empathize with Nora Ephron, who wrote the book I Feel Bad About My Neck, then there’s a new noninvasive cosmetic procedure that can tighten up that turkey neck. Instead of having a nip and a tuck under your chin to get rid of that undesireable extra skin – lovingly referred to as a “wattle” on Ally McBeal – you can now have a procedure done on your lunch hour that targets areas that need firming and tightening. There’s virtually no recovery time, and side effects are minimal. Ultherapy uses an ultrasound device to take images of several layers of the skin to target the loose areas. Then the device applies heat to those areas and tightens them almost immediately. Over time, the procedure is said to stimulate collagen growth and further tighten the skin. It can also be performed on the cheeks and eyelids, which lose collagen and can appear droopy as we age.Cosmetic surgeons and dermatologists tend to be the only practitioners who can do the procedure at this point, and the service doesn’t come cheap. Ultherapy can cost $1,500-2,000, depending on the doctor. There are no major side effects as of yet – the procedure was approved by the FDA in 2009 – but some patients might experience redness at the site of the treatment, which disappears over a few hours. Ultherapy is said to be painless, but some patients may feel a little bit of an electrical charge or heat at the site of the treatment. Sometimes one treatment can fix the problem, but doctors recommend keeping up the results by having it done yearly.
