First, see if anything is going on at daycare or school, such as the child being bullied or feeling anxiety about an upcoming test or other unsettling event. Take inventory of family events, like deaths, divorce or recent moves. Figure out what the child has been exposed to - what is he watching on TV or reading in books? If the dreams stem from a real phobia, such as spiders, dogs or storms, then it may help to find friendly, non-threatening images of the object of his fear in books or other media. If the fear lies with "pretend" things like monsters and boogeymen, then explain that those things aren't real. It may help to create "monster spray" - fill a clean spray bottle with water, and use it as "repellent" in trouble spots, like under the bed and in the closet before the child goes to bed for the night.
