One rule of thumb is to make sure that you're prepared to keep food cold or hot, and that you pack the proper supplies, including plates, utensils, cups and napkins. Coolers, thermoses and hot bags will help food stay at the proper temperature. Keep food covered and packed away until it's time to eat. While food may be the focus, be certain you're equipped with something to sit in. An old comforter, a sheet or lawn chairs will do the trick if there's no picnic table in the area. You may also want to bring a tablecloth. To spice things up and make it more fun for the kids, you can also bring seasonal table decorations.
